Save your first $10k — What, Why, How

What: Build your first $10,000 in savings.

Why: Develop money skills, consistency, and confidence; create a rainy‑day buffer so life’s hiccups don’t derail you.

How: Increase reliable income, spend less than you earn, and automate a simple weekly routine.

1) Grow reliable income

  • Start a small business with a service or product people pay for regularly, or get a job.
  • Small business target: add roughly +$150–$300/week to accelerate savings.
  • Job: aim for roles that grow salary over time or offer flexibility to build further income. Build your Dreams, Purpose and Goals Planner.

2) Spend below your income

  • Review subscriptions (streaming, apps, insurance); cancel unused or switch for better rates.
  • Move to a sharper mobile plan; compare SIM‑only deals.
  • Compare power/gas; switch for better rates.
  • Tighten food spend: plan meals; reduce takeaway.
  • Rule of thumb: spend no more than ~⅓ of net income on rent/mortgage to build savings.

3) Use a simple money system

  • Accounts: Bills (fixed), Spend (everyday), Buffer (savings/emergency).
  • Automate transfers on payday to Bills and Buffer first; live from Spend.
  • 10‑minute weekly check‑in: confirm last week’s spend and move leftovers to Buffer.
  • Use a basic rule (50/30/20 or buckets). Build your Cash‑Flow and Wealth Tracker.

4) Build your rainy‑day fund (3–6 months)

  • List essentials (rent, utilities, food, transport, insurance). Multiply by 3–6.
  • Park the fund in quickly liquifiable investments that aim for consistent return (e.g., high‑interest savings; some precious metals can be sold within 2–3 days at fair value).
  • Property isn’t liquid; forced sales in days usually need a discount.
  • Stocks and crypto are liquid but volatile; liquidating at cycle lows can hurt.

5) Start investing (small, steady, cautious)

  • Begin with small amounts; dollar‑cost average; keep experiments tiny.
  • Expect early mistakes; keep losses small while you learn.
